Note D♯ — Avoid Paralysis From Analysis

One of the most powerful creative lessons Quincy Jones ever shared was the idea that overthinking can suffocate authenticity before it even has a chance to exist.
Throughout his life and career, Quincy constantly challenged labels, restrictions, and the pressure to fit neatly into one category. Whether producing jazz, pop, soul, hip-hop, film scores, or television, he refused to allow society — or the music industry — to place him in a creative box.
Quincy believed real creativity comes from instinct.
Not trends.
Not fear.
Not algorithms.
Not trying to manufacture what you think people want.
As he explained in his writings, the moment artists become too focused on public approval, they risk overriding the very instincts that make their work meaningful in the first place.
“You’ve got to be sitting deep in truth in order to create truth.”
That philosophy shaped everything he touched.
Quincy often spoke about entering an “alpha state” while creating — a relaxed, open mental space where ideas could flow naturally without internal judgment. He believed creativity was less about forcing inspiration and more about getting out of your own way long enough to receive it.
He also warned against hyper-classification in art.
To Quincy, there were only two kinds of music:
good music and the other kind.
He believed labels and categories should describe the finished product — not limit the creative process itself. That mindset allowed him to blend genres fearlessly and create work that crossed generations, cultures, and musical boundaries.
At its core, Note D♯ is about trusting yourself enough to begin.
Even if it’s messy.
Even if it’s unfinished.
Even if it’s only a single word, beat, sketch, or idea.
Because creativity cannot breathe under constant self-surveillance.
Sometimes you just have to:
- stop overthinking
- stop waiting for perfection
- stop worrying about reception
- and press record anyway
That’s where the magic lives.
