Greg Phillinganes: The Musician Behind the Magic

This weekend I stepped outside my comfort zone and went solo to see legendary keyboardist, arranger, and musical director Greg Phillinganes live at The Blue Note in Hollywood.

And when I say legendary, I mean LEGENDARY.

Greg is one of those musicians whose fingerprints are all over modern music — even if casual listeners don’t always know his name. A Detroit native and 50-year music veteran, he started professionally with Stevie Wonder’s band Wonderlove in the 1970s and went on to work with Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Eric Clapton, Toto, David Gilmour, John Mayer, and many more. He has also served as a musical director for major live productions, including Stevie Wonder performances and Michael Jackson-related tours.

That’s the thing about musicians like Greg Phillinganes: they don’t just “play keys.” They shape the sound, the transitions, the arrangements, the feel, and the emotional temperature of a performance.

Seeing him live reminded me that real musicianship still matters. The timing. The taste. The restraint. The choices. The way a player can hold an entire room without needing to overplay.

And Michael McDonald showed up. 😭🔥

I caught some footage from the night, because this is the kind of music moment that deserves more than a quick social media post. I’ll post that footage later this week.

Greg also recently joined the USC Thornton faculty, which means the next generation of musicians gets access to someone who has actually helped shape the records and performances we still study today.

Happy 70th Birthday, Greg Phillinganes! (May 12)
